How to Transfer Data
Your group's data is hosted in a Globus Collection — a secure, high-performance endpoint for research data. Use the instructions below to browse files in the portal or transfer data to your local machine or another system.
Getting Started
Browse files directly from this page by clicking Browse Data on any collection card above. Individual files can be opened or transferred from within the browser view.
For large or bulk transfers to your local machine, install Globus Connect Personal to create a personal endpoint on your computer. Once installed, you can use the Globus File Manager to move data between the UWBC collection and your local system — even for multi-gigabyte datasets.
Many universities and research organizations already have Globus server endpoints available. If you have access to institutional computing resources, check with your IT department or research computing group — you may be able to transfer data directly between your institution's endpoint and the UWBC collection without installing anything locally.
The video tutorial below walks through the full Globus transfer workflow step by step.

Frequently Asked Questions
Globus permission changes may take up to 15 minutes to take effect. Access to data collections is managed automatically by a service running on the Globus storage server, which syncs on a regular schedule.
If you were recently added to a group or your Globus account was just configured, please allow up to 15 minutes and then try again.
If the 15 minutes have passed but the collection still isn't visible, the portal may be showing cached data. Try to reload from the latest source. If access is still unavailable after that, contact UWBC staff.
Only if you want to download multiple files at once. A single file can be downloaded via your web browser, but folders and multiple files require you to use the transfer button to move data between endpoints. Installing the Globus application creates a personal endpoint on your local machine.
This is usually a firewall or software policy restriction that your IT department can resolve. Globus Connect Personal makes outbound-only connections — it does not require any inbound firewall rules — and all authentication traffic uses standard HTTPS (port 443). In many cases, simply sharing the network requirements with your IT administrator is enough to get approval.
Our IT Administrator reference on the Globus information page provides the exact hostnames, port numbers, CIDR blocks, and compliance details your IT team needs to evaluate and allow Globus. You can share that page directly with your IT or security team.
Download uses your web browser to save a single file to your local machine. Transfer is Globus's mechanism for moving large datasets — it establishes a secure connection between two systems (called endpoints) and runs in the background, so you can close your browser without losing progress. Transfers can also be scheduled.
Transfers won't fail if you shut down or go offline — they are suspended and automatically resume when your system comes back online.
Globus will continue to retry a stalled transfer until one of three things happens:
- The problem is resolved (permissions corrected, endpoint comes back online),
- You cancel the task from the Globus File Manager, or
- No progress has been made for three days, at which point Globus notifies you that the transfer has failed.
Yes. Globus is designed to transfer data between data center endpoints and supports Linux natively. If your organization does not have a server endpoint, you can install Globus Connect Personal on your Linux machine to create a personal endpoint.
Yes. Globus provides a command-line interface (CLI) for scripting and automating transfers.
